DAYLIGHT-MIMICKING LED LUMINAIRE
BAU is collaborating with Drexel University, Pulsar Informatics and Appalachian Lighting Systems to design and evaluate an automatic diurnal/seasonal daylight-matching LED luminaire (DAYlight) to be installed on one wing of the dementia unit at St. Francis Country House. The BAU team includes experts in informatics, product design, chronobiology and dementia health disorders. DAYlight addresses the dual sustainability issues of energy efficiency and health/wellbeing of building occupants. Research has shown LED Solid State Lighting to be more energy-efficient and longer lasting with lower lifecycle costs than other light sources and that natural daylight controls the body’s circadian rhythms and affects overall wellbeing. DAYlight will be a fully programmed, automatic integrated LED luminaire prototype that simulates the color and intensity of natural daylight throughout the day and correlates lighting levels with seasonal variation.
